Mourinho’s Manchester United put in an improved performance tonight in their 0-0 draw with Valencia in the Champions League, but it is still a result that will do little to relieve the speculation around Jose’s job, speculation that has now seen Zinedine Zidane go odds on to replace the Portuguese should/when he get the sack.
Zidane is now a best price of 8/11 with Betfair to take over the hot seat at United, with ex Chelsea boss, Antonio Conte the second favourite at 10/1.
Mourinho is still odds on to be the first manager to go in the sack race betting, with online betting website Oddschecker reporting that a staggering 79% of bets (percentage taken when article was written at 13.51 on Tuesday) on this market were placed on Mourinho following the 3-1 debacle at West Ham on Saturday.
I though the players put in a shift for Mourinho against Valencia tonight, if anything, their problems looked to be more down to a lack of confidence. What has caused the erosion in their confidence is another argument though.
Attention will now move to Saturday, when struggling Newcastle visit Old Trafford. They will be another team who will sit back and look to frustrate, and I’m fairly sure that old adversary, Rafa Benitez, will happily try and hammer another nail into Mourinho’s coffin.
