With the knockout stages now upon us, we have identified the leaders, runners-up and surprise packages in each group at Euro 2024:
Group A - The Hosts Lead the Way
Group A included Germany, Switzerland, Hungary and Scotland. Germany made an excellent start, winning two of their first three matches. As a result, they topped the group with seven points and now face the runners-up of Group C, Denmark, in the round of 16.
Switzerland performed consistently, earning five points and winning many new friends along the way. They have deservedly advanced into the round of 16 and will play against Italy.
Hungary were perhaps the biggest surprise from Group A. Despite being considered the underdogs, they finished third with three points but that was not enough to qualify.
Group B - Spain and Italy’s Fight for the Top
Group B showcased some fantastic games featuring Spain, Italy, Croatia and Albania. Spain and Italy have both advanced to the Round of 16, with nine and four points respectively.
Spain emerged as the group winners after triumphing in all their matches, accumulating nine points. They have proudly advanced to the Round of 16 and will now face Georgia, a game in which they will start hot favourites.
Italy have so far failed to impress at Euro 2024 but ultimately secured second place with four points. They could be in for a huge test against Switzerland.
Albania and Croatia battled for third place, with the latter clinching the third spot by two points, but both teams were eliminated.
Group C - England Take Charge
This year's path for Group C teams has been uninspiring at best. England qualified for the Round of 16 as the group leaders, having won one match and drawn two, but supporters have been left infuriated by Gareth Southgate’s perceived lack of exciting football.
The draw has opened up kindly for England, who will now play Slovakia. On paper, the Three Lions should win, but fans remain pessimistic.
Denmark and Slovenia both secured three points, securing their spots in the Round of 16. As a result, Serbia have been eliminated from the tournament and Slovenia will meet against Portugal.
Group D - France and Netherlands in Control
Austria were the huge surprise package in Group D, finishing top of the group at the expense of France and the Netherlands. They will now play Turkey in the round of 16.
France’s progress has been underwhelming, but they made it through and now have a tricky encounter against Belgium.
The Netherlands have also struggled and scraped into the knockout stages, where dangerous Romania await.
Poland never really got going and are out of Euro 2024 after suffering two defeats.
Group E - The Group of Surprises
Group E provided an intriguing spectacle, with all four teams finishing level on points.
Despite a loss, Romania managed to secure a leading position with four points. Their positive goal difference of +1 reflects their competitive spirit. Romania will face the Netherlands next, while runners-up Belgium have been disappointing and now have an almighty task against France. Slovakia and Ukraine claimed four points, with the former playing England and the latter out of the tournament by dint of inferior goal difference.
Group F - Georgia steal the show
Portugal, who now play Slovenia, won the group with a game to spare, but Georgia were the main box-office attraction in the Group F. Their 2-0 victory over the Portuguese was simply stunning and earned them a place in the round of 16, in which they play Spain.
Portugal play Slovenia, but they must improve upon that lifeless display, while Turkey sneaked into the knockout stages with a dramatic late win against the Czech Republic, who have been knocked out.
