2020 Champions League Mini Tournament

The quartet finals of the revamped 2020 Champions League are now complete after Bayern Munich and Barcelona wrapped up their respective aggregate wins on Saturday night.

Despite the popular view that Bayern Munich look the most polished side in the competition, it’s still England’s Manchester City that are the bookmakers' favourites.

Pep’s team are now 21/10 to win their first ever Champions League, with Bayern Munich closely following behind on 3/1.

PSG are 5/1, while Barcelona are 7/1. The Catalans play Munich in the quarter-finals. This might go some way to explaining why Munich aren’t the current favourites.

Should the Bavarians dispatch Barcelona on Friday 14th August, then I expect to see Munich take the role of Champions League favourites.

Manchester City are also in the same side of the draw as Munich, so it’s obvious that both bookmakers and punters believe the winners will come from this half of the draw.

Champions League 2020 Format and Schedule

In order to get the 2020 Champions League competition completed quickly and as safely as possible, UEFA have rescheduled a mini tournament to be played in Lisbon across 12 days.

Once the outstanding Round of 16 second legs have been completed, the competition takes on a World Cup style format.

Instead of two legged home and away fixtures, ties will instead be straight knock out matches.

These fixtures are one-off matches, that will be decided on the night. If 90 minutes ins't enough, then extra-time and penalties will be used.

This is a one-off break from the conventional format due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. UEFA decided that playing all the matches in one city is the safest and most efficient way to complete the competition.

The 4 quarter-finals and 2 semi-finals will be played at two venues in Lisbon. Benfica's Estádio da Luz and Sporting Lisbon's Estádio José Alvalade will host the matches.

With the final at the Estádio da Luz on Sunday 23rd August.
