Holland now find themselves as the 11/8 favourites to win the world cup after their 3-2 victory over Uruguay in the first semi-final on Tuesday night. For me, they made hard work of things and if they are to beat either Spain or Germany they will have to up their game a great deal.
After the Dutch conceded the equaliser in the 41st minute, I thought they wobbled more than just a bit. For the first 20 minutes of the 2nd half they just went into their shell and looked more like a team hell bent on not losing, rather than trying to win the match.
Then about 5 minutes before Wesley Sneijder put them 2-1 up, the Dutch upped their collective game which resulted in two quick goals to effectively finish the game as a contest. When they came out and played in this manner it was obvious that they were the better side.
Ok, so it was a world cup semi-final and the pressure was on, but I can’t see the Germans letting them get away with a nervous passage of play like that, should they make the final.
Sneijder’s goal was a close call for off side, no doubt the Uruguay team will say it was off side, but for me it was one of those close calls that could have gone either way. The attacker looked to be a fraction ahead of the defender, but there was certainly no daylight between them, and the game is supposed to be about scoring goals so I have no problem with it standing.
I still see the Dutch having their work cut out to finally win the world cup, and on this form I can’t see them doing it. But as we saw with their victory over Brazil, they can beat anybody on their day.
