For so long now, Ronald Koeman has been the odds on favourite to be the next Southampton manager, but today seen another big hitter come into the frame – in the betting at least – as Roberto Mancini has now moved up the betting and is second favourite behind Koeman to get the job at St Mary’s.
Mancini quit his job as manager of Galatasaray on Wednesday and is now a free agent, prompting this move in the betting that has seen him move into second favourite at a best price of 2/1 with Skybet, he is in fact as short as 6/4 in a couple of places.
Is this punters putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with 5? Or is this gamble based on some hard evidence that the Italian is in the frame for the job?
Would Mancini really quit a lucrative job and regular European football with Galatasaray to come to England and manage Southampton? A team, that with all due respect, will do very well to come anywhere near the levels they achieved last year, with the likely departures of more of their big names (Rickie Lambert having already departed) after the World Cup.
Sometimes a manager/club combo doesn’t seem to fit, and this looks like one of them to me. Although who would have thought that Michael Laudrup would have turned up at Swansea, or Ronny Deila at Celtic? I certainly wouldn’t have!!
Anyway, this move on Mancini – whether intelligence based or not – has seen a slight drift in Koeman’s odds, with the Dutchman now out to 5/4 favourite with Betvictor.
