No big surprise to see Steven Gerrard has stepped down as England captain and retired from international football to concentrate on playing for Liverpool next season, and as a result of this, we now have a ‘Next England Captain’ market.
The early front runner and obvious favourite is Wayne Rooney, who is a best price of 4/9 to be Roy Hodgson’s next captain. After that comes Gary Cahill at 11/2, and then Joe Hart at 13/2.
Unless Hodgson goes totally left field and picks a youngster, it surely has to come from one of those three players.
Is Wayne Rooney a permanent fixture in the England team now though? In the media at least, there seems to be a debate as to whether he is worthy of his place, while I don’t think that Gary Cahill or Joe Hart are under any immediate pressure for their respective places.
All these things have to be taken into consideration when betting on this market, if Hodgson doesn’t see Rooney as a permanent fixture in his team, then surely he can’t make him captain?
If Hodgson decides to go with youth who will it be? It surely couldn’t be Jack Wilshere at the moment, his form isn’t good enough to justify his place, so that only probably leaves Jordon Henderson.
