New Real Madrid signing James Rodriguez is a massive 66/1 with Betvictor to be the top scorer in the new La Liga season (2014/15), which seems a touch on the large side to me. Ronaldo is 4/6 favourite, with Messi a 6/4 chance.
Yes, he may be up against Ronaldo and Messi, but who’s to say that Rodriguez can’t be the new sensation of Spanish football? He’s only 23, so why can’t he be the changing of the guard at Real Madrid?
I know that it’s a big ask to beat Ronaldo and Messi, but both suffered injuries last season and neither man looked 100% at the recent world cup, whereas Rodriguez looked to be a man coming into his prime.
The chances are that whoever wins the league between Real and Barca will have the top scorer, and Real are the early favourites to win the title. Betvictor make Real favourites at 5/6, with Barca at 11/10 and defending champions Atletico at 14/1. I don’t expect Atletico to be so much of a force this season, as they have lost a large part of last season’s team.
Last season at Monaco, Rodriguez score 9 goals in 30 starts (+ 4 subs appearances), and although that stat doesn’t suggest he will blow Ronaldo and Messi out of the water, it does show that he can score at a reasonable rate. And he has just won the Golden Boot for being the top scorer at the World Cup, so there can be no doubts about his pedigree.
In a Real Madrid shirt though, things will be different to how it was at Monaco. Imagine how many more chances he will get at Madrid? He will be playing in a winning team that creates no end of scoring chances alongside goal creators like Gareth Bale. I’m not saying he will beat Ronaldo in the goals charts, but at 66/1 he must be worth a small punt.
