Tuesday night’s Champions League fixtures seen some remarkable performances and results. There was controversy at Celtic, great wins for Arsenal and Chelsea, and some great late drama at the Porto and Ajax matches.
I was particularly interested to see how Arsenal would fare against Napoli, as Napoli would probably be their stiffest test so far this season. I was amazed at the ease in which the Gunners won in the end, maybe they are the real deal this year? That said, Napoli did look a bit shambolic on the night.
Despite the impressive win, Arsenal are still no where near the favourites in the outright winner betting, Arsene Wenger’s men can currently be backed at 18/1 (joint ninth favourites) with Bet365 to win the Champions League.
The pick of tonight’s matches for me sees Man City v current the Bundesliga, Super Cup and Champions League holders, Bayern Munich. City are 3.25, the Draw is 3.40, Bayern are 2.37.
City have stuttered a bit this season, they have recorded some impressive victories in recent weeks, but have also suffered some shock defeats, the most recent away to Aston Villa on Saturday. Pellegrini will need to turn things around very quickly if they plan to challenge undefeated Bayern Munich, whom have won their last 6 back-to-back fixtures.
City’s neighbours are also in action, and a tie away at Shakhtar looks like one of those fixtures a manager under pressure must dread. On paper it’s one of those games that the fans proably expect to win, but this isn’t the reality of the situation in my view.
I believe this is one of those tricky away fixtures that managers like Mourinho, Ferguson, Wenger, etc, would be happy to get a point from. Would David Moyes get away with earning a draw here under the current circumstances? I doubt it, I reckon he would get plenty of criticism. I don’t expect Moyes to let this effect his team selection though.
The bookmakers have it down as a tight fixture, Shakhtar are 2.70, the Draw is 3.40, and Man Utd are 2.80.
I suspect these odds could change later, depending on Robin Van Persie’s fitness and availability. I expect him to be included, but is he really 100% fit?
Other big teams in action tonight include Real Madrid, Juventus and PSG. All these matches qualify for the Bet365 100% Euro Soccer, and Bore Draw bonuses.
