This match is a qualifier for Euro 2024, with the competition being held in Germany next summer. In the betting to win the match, Gareth Southgate’s England are just 1/14, with the draw at 10/1, and North Macedonia at 30/1.
Our immediate thought about those odds is that England is very short. Let’s not forget, the Macedonians are a dangerous side, having famously knocked Italy out in the 2022 World Cup qualifying playoffs.
But on the flip side, can you really see England not making it four wins from four in their qualifying campaign? This doesn’t make England a good value bet, and at odds of 1/14, a bet on England is very risky.
Tight group on paper
North Macedonia are no mugs though. And in a group that also contains Italy and Ukraine, England know they can’t afford any slip ups at home. But with England already having three wins from three, and Italy having already lost 2-1 at home to England, Southgate’s team are just 2/9 to win the group, and 1/33 to finish in the top two.
On Friday the Three Lions made light work of Malta, and with a record of 11 successive home qualifier wins under Southgate, they will expect another 3 points. In 10 of those matches, England have scored at least two goals. So we should expect goals at Old Trafford?
As for North Macedonia, they sit fourth in the group on 3 points from two games - the same points as Italy and Ukraine. They lost 3-2 at home to Ukraine on Friday, which followed a 2-1 win over Malta in their opening match.
