After his first hat-trick in the Premier League on Saturday, William Hill now make Erling Haaland just 8/13 to be Premier League top goalscorer in the 2022/23 season.
The Norwegian scored a 19 minute treble on Saturday to help his Manchester City side overcome a 2-0 deficit against Crystal Palace. Viera’s Palace team led 2-0 at the break, and looked good value to win at the Etihad for the second time in two seasons.
Then after the break, it was the Erling Haaland show. First, Bernando got the comeback started. Firing home a slightly deflected shot after 53 minutes. Then Haaland took over.
Haaland’s hat-trick was his 4th, 5th, and 6th goals of the season. In just four Premier League matches!
Haaland is now two two goals ahead of Aleksandar Mitrovic (4) of Fulham, and Rodrigo (4) of Leeds. He is also four goals clear of Harry Kane (2), Gabriel Jesus (2), and Mohamed Salah (2), the players perceived to be his chief rivals this season.
The biggest threat to Haaland being top goalscorer seems to be his Man City manager Pep Guardiola. That’s not a criticism. Guardiola is understandably trying to look after his star asset. Haaland has only completed 90 minutes once this season, the match against Newcastle, when City were looking for a late winner.
In his other three matches, Haaland has been substituted in the latter stages. Even after his 83d minute withdrawal against Palace, Haaland looked frustrated.
Even taking that into consideration, it’s pretty inevitable that Haaland will get enough game time to score plenty. He has already shown that.
