Humiliated England crash 4-0 to Hungary

England's 2021/22 season ended in embarrassing style as Gareth Southgate's team were thrashed 4-0 at home to Hungary.

The defeat leaves England rock bottom of their Nations League group, with just 2 points from four matches. England's opponents, Hungary, sit top on 7 points. The Hungarians took a maximum of 6 points from their two matches against the Three Lions.

Elsewhere in the group, Germany thrashed Italy 5-2 in Dortmund. The Germans are now second on 6 points. Italy sits third on 5 points.

Nations League Humiliation for Southgate and England

It's been a disastrous four games for England in the Nations League over the past couple of weeks. They looked clueless and lacking ideas as they managed just one goal in four matches, and that goal was a penalty!

The bad run of form couldn't have come at a worse time for Southgate. There's just two more matches scheduled before the start of the 2022 World Cup.

Many fans seem to be irked by Southgate's tactics and lack of changes within the match. And after the match, social media (not that that’s worth worrying about) was awash with calls for the England manager to go.

That’s obviously not going to happen with just 5 months until the Qatar 2022 World Cup. But with talent like Jack Grealish and Phil Foden frequently overlooked by the England boss, it’s not hard to see why fans are frustrated.

Also wearing thin are Southgates excuses. Yes, Hungary is a decent side who has to be respected. But they have a FIFA World Raning of 40 for a reason.

FIFA World Rankings Hungary

For the record, Hungary’s four goals were scored by Roland Sallai (2), Zsolt Nagy, and Dániel Gazdag. Highlights follow, if you can bring yourself to watch. Or in the event you’re not an England fan, you may well enjoy it.

World Cup Betting

In the betting to win the 2022 World Cup, England is still third favourites at 13/2. Southgates men are just behind the Brazilians and the French. Not sure how they are ahead of the likes of Germany to be honest.

In Group B betting, England are 1/16 to qualify for the next round, and 1/3 to win the group. Odds from Betfair Sportsbook, more details available in our Betfair Review.
