The draw for the Champions League Round of 16 (2020/21) has taken place, and it has thrown up some intriguing ties for some of Europe’s big guns.
From an English perspective, it could have been worse. On paper, Chelsea drawing Atletico Madrid looks the most difficult tie for the English trio.
2019 champions Liverpool have been drawn against RB Leipzig of the Bundesliga, while Man City have also landed German opposition, in the form of Borussia Monchengladbach.
This is the first time Monchengladbach have made it to the last 16 of Europe’s elite competition, and the draw certainly could have been kinder to them.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side take on last season’s beaten semi-finalists, RB Leipzig – the team who put paid to Manchester United’s Champions League hopes this season.
Chelsea’s clash with Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid is certainly a clash of two contrasting styles. It will also be a decent pointer to just how far Lampard’s team have come in a short space of time.
Tie of the round looks to be Barcelona against PSG. Back in 2017 the two sides met in a classic encounter.
Defending Champions Bayern Munich have a tricky looking tie with Lazio. But the German giants should be well capable of overcoming the Italians over 2 legs.
