Arsenal win the 2020 Community Shield

The 2020/21 English football season got underway on Saturday and it was more silverware for Arsenal as they beat Liverpool on penalties to win the 2020 Community Shield.

It wasn't the most entertaining of matches, but it did give a valuable insight of what we might get from these two sides this coming season.

The two teams couldn't be separated in 90 minutes, with the sides drawing 1-1.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring for Arsenal in the 12th minute, before Takumi Minamino equalised for Liverpool with just under 20 minutes left to play.

The penalty shoot out was just as tight, with Liverpool's Rhian Brewster the only player of the 10 to miss his spot kick.

Arteta will be hoping 2020 Community Shield is first of many trophies for Arsenal this season

Despite the Community Shield win, I believe this looks set to be another season of building for Arsenal.

Manager Mikel Arteta is slowly bloody a whole battery of English youngsters. And while they all look exciting prospects, they are still some way short of the finished articles.

Guys like Bukayo Saka, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson and Joe Willock are all future stars.

There is half a team coming through at the same time for Arsenal, and the future is promising.

As we seen in the match yesterday though, they are still short of fulfilling that promise.

At times Arsenal's young stars troubled Klopp's Reds, but over the course of 90 minutes they weren't able to maintain the required level.

This will come in time though. The talent is there, and over the next 2 to 3 years these guys will only grow stronger.

For now though, I only see Arsenal capable of winning the odd domestic cup competition.

It's hard to see Liverpool repeating last season's feats on this form

On the evidence of how Liverpool completed last season, and how they started this one in the Community Shield, it's very hard to see them retaining their Premier League title.

For the first 5 to 6 months of last season, the Red's were outstanding.

The level of performance they played at was so high, there was only ever one way their form could go.

I really can't see them achieving those heights for 5 to 6 months again this season.

The performance in the Community Shield was more like the form Liverpool ended last season in.

The players just don't look as dominant as they did 12 months ago.

That said, Liverpool did look stronger than Arsenal across the 90 minutes.

In all the stats - possession, shots on target, etc - Liverpool dominated, but yet they never looked as assured as last season.

It could be that Liverpool are warming up, and will be more ready when the season starts for real in 2 weeks time.

In the corresponding match 12 months ago, Liverpool didn't get the job done either. So maybe it would be wrong to judge them too much on this match.

After all, last season didn't turn out too badly for them, did it!
