2020 Championship Play-Off Preview – Brentford V Fulham

The so-called richest football match in the world takes place this Tuesday when Brentford and Fulham meet in the 2020 Championship play-off final.

The winners of the match get the twentieth and final spot in the Premier League for the 2020/21 season.

It's quite fitting that the third and fourth placed teams are contesting the final this season.

Brentford and Fulham were both hot on the heels of the top two teams in the Championship this season.

Both sides finished on 81 points, just 2 behind second placed West Brom, and 8 points clear of fifth placed Cardiff City.

And both teams can rightly feel they deserve to be lining up in the Championship finale.

When and where is the 2020 Championship Play-Off Final?

The final of 2020 Championship play-offs is to be played on Tuesday 4th August, with kick-off at 7.45pm.

The match will be decided on the night. Meaning extra-time and penalties if necessary.

The match was originally scheduled for Monday May 25th, but had to be rescheduled due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Wembley is the venue for the final, and like with the FA Cup Final, no fans will be in the stadium.

Route to the Final

Brentford finished third in the Championship table, and only missed out on automatic promotion by losing their final 2 matches of the season.

The Bees then overcame Swansea 3-2 on aggregate in their play-off semi-final. They lost the 1st leg at the Liberty Stadium 1-0, before winning the return 3-1, in the last ever match at Griffin Park.

Fulham also had their chances to compete with West Brom for the second automatic promotion spot. But in the end they had to settle for a fourth place Championship finish.

In their play-off semi-final, Scott Parker's team overcame Cardiff City, also with a 3-2 aggregate scoreline. The Londoners won the 1st leg in Cardiff 2-0, before losing the 2nd leg 2-1 at Craven Cottage.

Where can I watch the play-off final?

As Sky Sports have exclusive coverage rights to the Sky Bet Championship in the UK, they will be showing the match live.

Coverage on Sky Sports Football and Sky Sports Main Event gets under way at 7pm (UK time).

How much money is the 2020 Play-Off Final worth?

According to financial advisory company Deloitte, getting promotion to the Premier League would earn Brentford £160 million over 3 years.

Promotion for Fulham would see them earn £135 million over the same period. The difference in figures is down to the fact that Fulham have been receiving parachute payments.
