Aston Villa pull off remarkable Premier League escape and Stay Up

Aston Villa's point away at West Ham on Sunday was enough to ensure Villa stay up, as Dean Smith's men managed to pull off a remarkable escape.

The 1-1 draw away to the Hammers at the London Stadium, was enough to keep Villa up. The result also sees both Watford and Bournemouth join Norwich in the Championship for next seas

Villa Stay Up after Turnaround in Form

Villa's turnaround in form came just in the nick of time. The Villains managed 8 points from their final 4 games. A run that seen them climb out of the relegation zone after the 37th match of the season.

In fairness to Bournemouth, they themselves had a decent run-in. Eddie Howe's team picked up 7 points from their last 5 matches, but ultimately, it wasn't enough.

It was probably the 2-0 home defeat to Southampton in the 37th match, that did ultimately did for the Cherries. That was the crucial winnable match that they really couldn't afford to lose, and they did!

For Villa, they really looked down and out just a few weeks back. Their run-in results have shown that there is plenty of spirit and fight in this bunch of players. And surely it has earned Dean Smith another season in the manager's job?

The Goal that never was

When we look back at their season though, should we not have realised that Villa's luck was in after the goal that never was, in the match against Sheffield United?

The huge slice of luck Villa got when the technology failed to alert Michael Oliver that Oliver Norwood's first half free kick had crossed the line, earned Villa an extra point. And Villa only survived by 1 point.

It was a huge slice of luck, and Bournemouth and Eddie Howe have every right to feel aggrieved.

As someone sarcastically pointed out at the time, the ball was that far over the line, it was practically in the Holte End!

There could possibly be repercussions for this further down the line. Relegation is going to cost Bournemouth a fortune, and they might well argue that the technology failing has played a huge part in this.

From Villa's point of view, they won't care a jot. Any possible legal wranglings shouldn't involve them, meaning they can solely focus on preparing for next season.
