10 wins in a row see Real Madrid crowned La Liga Champions

Real Madrid were crowned La Liga champions on Thursday night after beating Villarreal 2-1, the win completed a remarkable turnaround that saw Los Blancos overhaul pre lockdown leaders Barcelona, and end up winning the title with one game still to play.

Real Madrid are La Liga Champions for 34th Time

The victory over Villarreal was Madrid's tenth win in a row, and capped a remarkable comeback for manager, Zinedine Zidane

The Frenchman only returned to the club in Madrid, so to have had such an impact in such a short space of time is a major achievement.

The implosion at the Nou Camp certainly assisted Madrid. While Madrid chalked up their 10 in a row, their Catalan rivals only managed 6 wins, 3 draws and 1 defeats.

But you can't take anything away from what Zidane and his team have achieved. Winning 10 in a row, shows it was Madrid winning La Liga, not Barcelona throwing it away.

It was very unlike Madrid in the run-in as well. The flamboyant attacking style we expect from Real Madrid, was gone, replaced by a workmanlike pragmatic style instead.

Madrid's matches were more wars of attrition. Six of the ten wins were by the odd goal, and there were three 1-0s in that run.

Crazy Night in Spain with 9 Red Cards

Matchday 37 in Spain was a crazy night though. In total we seen 9 red cards, and in Madrid's match we had the ridiculous sight of Sergio Ramos passing a penalty sideways to Karim Benzema.

This was when the score was at 1-0, it wasn't like Madrid were 4 up with 5 minutes to go.

Encroachment by Benzema resulted in the referee disallowing the penalty. Luckily Madrid were allowed to retake, and this time the Frenchman took the kick himself and scored.

It could easily be argued that this was extreme arrogance from Madrid. It seems that the leaders were trying to help get Benzema to the top of the goal scoring charts. Surely just winning the match and title was the most important thing.

Madrid will complete their season on Sunday with a visit to relegation threatened Leganes.

They then have the unenviable task of trying to overturn a 2-1 deficit away at Manchester City in the 2nd leg of their Champions League Round of 16 match.

On current form you'd have to give Zidane's team a chance.
