Atletico Madrid close in on La Liga Top 4 finish

Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid took another giant leap towards Champions League football earlier when they beat relegation threatened Real Mallorca 3-0 in the day's only La Liga match.

Another season in Champions League for Atletico

The result sees Atletico open up an 8 point gap over fifth placed Villarreal, with el Submarino Amarillo (the yellow submarine), having a game in hand.

And the game in hand just happens to be against Barcelona, so with just 15 points left for Villarreal to play for, things are looking good for Simeone and his team.

Atletico did their usual job of grinding the opposition down, and eventually took the lead in the 29th minute courtesy of a Alvaro Morata penalty. The former Chelsea striker added a second on the stroke of half time.

Koke sealed the victory when he made it 3-0 after 79 minutes. The result all but ensured Atletico Madrid of a Top 4 finish in La Liga and Champions League football next season.

It's a result that also all but confirms relegation for Real Mallorca. The Islanders are now 5 points from safety, and have only 4 matches left. Their odds of 1/10 for relegation tell you all you need to know.

There's three matches on Saturday in Spain, with a couple of them having something riding on them.

In the fight for Europa League places, Granada host Valencia. Both sides are locked on 46 points, sitting 9th and 10th respectively.

While at the bottom, Celta Vigo are at home to Real Betis, who are 8 points clear of Mallorca, and relatively safe.

Three points for Celta Vigo on Saturday would see them move onto 37 points alongside Betis, and relative safety. It would also move The Celts (who currently sit 4th bottom) 8 points clear of the bottom 3.

At the top of the table, Madrid and Barcelona are both in action on Sunday.
