Chelsea announce agreement to sign Timo Werner

Chelsea have this morning announced on their club website that they have come to an agreement with RB Leipzig, to sign exciting Germany forward Timo Werner.

The club have also said that personal terms have been agreed on a 4 year deal, and all that remains to be done is Werner's medical. Werner is to remain with his club, RB Leipzig, and will join up with his new Chelsea team mates in July.

Timo Werner recorded a short video announcing he is happy to sign for Chelsea.

This move also signals that Werner won't be competing in the Champions League for Leipzig, when the mini tournament resumes in August, in Lisbon.

Werner will be an excellent addition to Chelsea's attacking ranks. He can play up front in a two, and can operate down either flank, mainly the left.

It was these versatile qualities that first attracted the attention of Liverpool, as he seemed a player ready made for their system and style of play.

Werner seemed certain for Liverpool just a few weeks back

Why Liverpool dropped out of the running for Werner's signature, who knows. It is rumoured that after the Covid-19 outbreak, Liverpool's money men decided to sit on their hands. Preferring to sit back and see how the financial implications play out.

That sounds sensible, but in the Premier League, some clubs seem insulated to the problems caused by the Pandemic. Meaning if you show any sign of dither or delay, you will miss out.

Whether Liverpool dithered, or just pulled out, who knows. In football betting, the bookmakers had Werner odds on to join Liverpool for months. So someone, somewhere, thought it was going to happen.

Chelsea certainly don't seem to be one of the clubs effected by the Covid-19 fall out. Alongside the signing of Hakim Ziyech from Ajax, Chelsea are strengthening in an impressive fashion.

The arrival of Werner could be a sign of trouble at Chelsea for Hudson-Odoi

But where does this leave Chelsea youngsters like Billy Gilmour, Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and even more established players like Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley?

But then on the flip side, Pedro and Willian look set to leave. So this could be seen more as a refreshing of the squad.

The arrival of Timo Werner could bloke the progress of Callum Hudson-Odoi

I'd certainly be concerned if I were Hudson-Odoi, that's Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic and now probably Timo Werner to compete with. Maybe the young English winger might want to revisit the possibility of a move to Bayern Munich?

Another person who might well be starting to feel the heat is Frank Lampard. The inexperienced manager had a free hit this season with the transfer ban.

It's an absolute certainty that better will be expected from Lampard and his team next season. The Stamford Bridge hierarchy are delivering in the transfer market, and they will expect the same on the pitch.
