Bayern march on while relegation battle hots up – Bundesliga Week 29 Update

It was another interesting day in the Bundesliga on Saturday (Week 29), with league leaders Bayern Munich marching on towards yet another title, while the relegation fight at the bottom really came to life.

Tuesday afternoon's victory over Dortmund seems to have removed any small pressure Bayern may have been feeling. The league leaders absolutely destroyed relegation threatened Fortuna Düsseldorf with a ruthless display, running out 5-0 winners.

There was another 2 goals for the league's top scorer, Robert Lewandowski, his 28th and 29th of the season. That's 29 goals from his 27 starts in the Bundesliga this season. No wonder seasoned observers claim he is in the form of his life.

Bundesliga Relegation Battle Is Really Hotting Up

Down at the bottom is where the real action took place on Saturday, where results have really made things interesting.

We pointed out in yesterday's blog post, that this weekend represented a big chance for Werder Bremen to make a move in their bid for survival. And boy, did they do so.

Florian Kohfeldt's team did their bit, by winning 1-0 away at Schalke. But they didn't half get a helping hand off the teams directly above them.

As we mentioned above, and suspected would happen, Fortuna Düsseldorf got a good hiding off champions elect, Bayern Munich. This leaves Uwe Rösler's team just 2 points ahead of Bremen, who can now overtake Düsseldorf if they win their game in hand.

This would see Düsseldorf drop into the two automatic relegation places.

Further good news for Bremen was 15th placed side, Mainz, losing 1-0 at home to Hoffenheim. As it stands, Mainz are now only 3 points - all be it with a better goal difference - ahead of Bremen. Again, Bremen have a game in hand.

For those not familiar with the Bundesliga, the bottom 2 (17th and 18th placed teams) automatically go down. While the team in 16th place goes into a play off, to decide whether they go down or not.

So the team in 15th place, currently Mainz on 28 points, is the proverbial 4th bottom team. Results this weekend, mean Bremen are now only 3 points from Mainz, and safety.

Augsburg currently sit in 14th place, on 31 points, so as it stands they are looking good. That said, all it takes is a couple of wins from the teams directly below them, and they could yet get dragged back in.

Champions League takes centre stage again on Sunday and Monday

Sunday and Monday sees the battle for the Champions League spots resume, with Mönchengladbach (at home to Union Berlin), and Dortmund (away at Paderborn) both in action.

Week 29's fixtures are then completed on Monday evening, when RB Leipzig travel to mid table Köln, where they will be hoping for another 3 points to boost their Champions League qualification chances.
