What Must Mourinho Do In Order To Make Spurs Title Contenders?

When Tottenham Hotspur made it through to the Champions League final last season, there was an expectancy that there were better things on the horizon.

However, fast forward nearly a year and Spurs have gone backwards in their progression as possible title contenders.

They are 41-points behind the runaway leaders, but more worryingly they find themselves in eighth below both Sheffield United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Mauricio Pochettino era was brought to an end earlier in the season, with Jose Mourinho brought in.

The Portuguese was seemingly the obvious choice for a club craving a trophy. However, his big-game mentality has eluded him throughout much of his first season in charge.

There are obviously factors that Mourinho could point to that haven’t helped his chances at Spurs. Injuries to important players such as Harry Kane and Heung Min-Son, and the departure of Christian Eriksen not helping his case.

But, what must Mourinho do over the summer months to get Spurs into the best possible position for a title challenge?

Mourinho Must Keep The Star Player At Spurs

Undoubtedly the essential piece of business that Mourinho needs to do over the summer is keeping hold of Harry Kane. The striker has already been linked with a move away, with Manchester United reportedly in the hunt.

If Spurs lose the England captain, then they will be immediately losing over 20 goals a season as well as a leader and focal point within their team. Over the last six seasons, Kane has scored a remarkable 133 goals.

That return isn’t something that Spurs could replace, with a striker of that calibre likely to cost more than Tottenham could afford to pay. Any chance they have of achieving success centres on them keeping Kane.

Improve Team Mentality & Attitude

Gary Neville has constantly questioned the mentality of Tottenham players throughout his stint as a Sky Sports pundit. And it’s hard to argue against him.

Spurs have had a weak mentality for as long as anyone can remember. And that has been their downfall on the big occasions.

Certain players don’t seem to have the mentality that winners should have, and instead they look nervous when the pressure is on. Mourinho needs to change that, but that could be easier said than done.

The attitude also needs to be right within the camp. Mourinho needs to install the belief that he got in his Chelsea side when he first arrived there in 2004.

That ‘us against the world’ mentality meant that the players would do whatever Mourinho asked.

The Portuguese must find that attitude from his players, and avoid the mess that he left at Old Trafford, which saw players locking horns against him.

Bring In The Right Kind Of Players

This summer window is vital for Tottenham Hotspur, as they will need to bring in the right kind of player. They will need to bring in natural winners that will be able to give the changing room something new.

Mourinho will be looking for a signing in the mould of Zlatan Ibrahimovic from his first season at Old Trafford, as the Swede was able to pull players around him up a few notches.

Spurs must avoid buying players that aren’t good enough to make the grade. They must ensure that they strengthen in problem areas by buying a new goalkeeper, right-back and central midfielder.

Only if they do all these things will Tottenham be considered a title hopeful.
