Premier League: The early race for the Golden Boot

The start to this season’s Premier League has been an exciting one. So far we have seen plenty of early surprises and an abundance of goals – 145 in fact.

Liverpool are the only side to boast a 100% record and there are already five points separating them from Manchester City in second.

Of the newly promoted sides, Norwich City have fared best, with two wins from their opening five games and as we take a look at some of the early contenders for this season’s Golden Boot, we begin with Carrow Road’s main man.

Teemu Pukki (Norwich City)

The Canaries’ Finnish star fired them to the Premier League last season, with 29 goals in the Championship and his rich vein of form has certainly continued this campaign.

Scoring Norwich’s third goal in their shock 3-2 win over the current champions, Manchester City at the weekend, Pukki has netted six goals so far. Averaging at a goal every 74 minutes, he’s also turned provider for two of Norwich’s goals.

This return sees the club sit in 13th after five games. Pukki may be a mere 13/1 for the Premier League Golden Boot, but there’s no denying he’s got what it takes in the top-flight. Tammy Abraham (Chelsea)

Another Championship star from last season, Abraham spent the campaign on-loan at Aston Villa from parent club, Chelsea. He set the second-tier of English football alight with his pace, trickery and goalscoring prowess.

Scoring 26 league goals to cement Villa’s place in the play-offs and then earn them a place in the final. Abraham has thus far proved his worth amongst the elite. #

Sergio Agüero (Manchester City)

Every season, Manchester City’s Argentine striker Agüero is there-or-thereabouts for the Golden Boot and this campaign is no different.

He currently shares his place at the top of the table with Abraham, having scored seven goals. Agüero is also averaging at a goal every 51 minutes.

He’s broken plenty of records during his time at the Etihad and just last weekend, joined an exclusive goalscoring club in becoming the third player to score in each of the first five games of a Premier League season.

With 171 goals to his name, Agüero is sixth in the all-time Premier League goal standings – and should he score this weekend at the Etihad, he’ll make it a century of home league goals.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Arsenal)

Last season’s joint Golden Boot winner has continued with a good start to this campaign. Arsenal have started (reasonably) brightly.

They have two wins and two draws from their opening handful of games, but should the goals from Aubameyang continue.

It will undoubtedly fire them up the table. A brace at the weekend gave the Gunners a two-goal lead, which they eventually gave away to Watford – and the Gabonese International wasn’t scared of being critical of his fellow players, post-match. Last season, Aubameyang netted 22 league goals.

If he continues his average of a goal every 90 minutes this season, he will surpass that tally with ease.
