The pressure on Jose Mourinho seemed to ratchet up on Monday, as first we seen stories linking Zinedine Zidane with the managers job at Old Trafford, and then there was another bizarre press conference with Mourinho again criticising some of his players in public, ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Valencia.
As a result, we have now seen Jose go odds on in the sack race betting. He is currently at 8/11 with Betfair and Paddy Power, and a best price of 4/5 with Betvictor. On Sunday, he was still odds against, so this represents a big shift.
The story out of the club at the moment is that Mourinho still has the backing of Ed Woodward and the Old Trafford hierarchy, but how long is that going to last if the performances on the pitch don’t improve? And looking at the body language of the players last Saturday, it’s hard to see it improving too much, if at all.
Ed Woodward does have the consolation that the next Premier League match is against the hapless Newcastle United, but even if the Red Devils do win that, it probably won’t be too long until the next crisis appears on the horizon.
And what if they can’t beat Newcastle, and it looks like the players are downing tools? Then it really would look terminal for the Portuguese.
Before the Newcaslte match on Saturday (kick off 5.30pm) at Old Traffoord, United have the small matter of Valencia to overcome in the Champions League, also at home (kick off 8pm, Tuesday).
Our enhanced odds new customer offers page has some good offers available on this week’s Champions League. There is even a 30/1 offer available on United.
Other reports today suggested that Mourinho has these two matches to save his job. It wouldn’t surprise me to see United win them both, but I do believe that it is only a matter of time before Jose goes, I just think he has upset far too many players in the United dressing room.
