Will Liverpool Be Top At Christmas?
Nothing short of an Arsenal victory in the Live Sky match on Monday night will see Liverpool top the league heading into the Christmas programme. I don’t know about anybody else, but at the start of the season I would probably have fell of my seat at the thought of putting any money on Liverpool topping the league on Christmas Day.
Of late, this has mainly been down to the form and goals of Luis Suarez, but despite this, Brendan Rodgers’ team are still only fourth favourites for the title at 11/2 with Ladbrokes.
I can remember back in 2006-07 (in the fist period of Mourinho) watching Cristiano Ronaldo come of age, and keep scoring important goals for Manchester United as they wrestled the title back from Chelsea.
At the start of that season, Ferguson’s men were outsiders as Chelsea looked nailed on for a third successive title, but as Ronaldo kept on scoring match winning goals over Christmas and the new year, I remember thinking he could win them the title here if he carries on like this….. could Suarez be doing the same for Liverpool this season?
Whether he can fire Liverpool to the title or not, Suarez already looks nailed on to be the player of the season (best price of 1/2 with Paddy Power). Surely now only another biting incident (or something of that nature), or a January transfer (I know he’s just signed a new contract), could see him not being player of the season?
By the way, I would rule nothing out of the equation in the crazy world of Luis Suarez!
I still think Manchester City are the team to beat though. It did look at one stage like their away day demons had come back to haunt them, as they allowed Fulham to peg them back after cruising into a 2-0 lead at Craven Cottage. City are still favourites at 6/5 with most layers.
On the back of another live TV match on Sunday, Ross Barkley now finds himself odds on to be a part of Roy Hodgson’s world cup squad. He is now 8/11 to make the final 23.
Of the more immediate future, and might Barkley find himself the target of a big money transfer move from David Moyes this January? He is the sort of player Manchester United need, but despite his current excellent form, is he still in the ‘one for the future’ category?
In my view, United need a world class performer, a player who is in his prime. As good as Barkley looks, he is not that player (yet). We keep hearing that those players are never available in January, and if you can get one, he will be cup tied from the Champions League. So maybe that makes a move for Barkley not totally out of the question.
Tomorrow night sees the return of Monday Night Football on Sky with the London Derby between Arsenal and Chelsea coming from the Emirates. And with it, we also see the return of the magnificent Bet365 £50.00 Free Bet for existing customers.
This free bet represents a brilliant chance to make around £35.00 risk free using the matched betting method, more details will follow tomorrow.
As this is a home game for Arsenal, it is surely a must win? After what happened away at Manchester City last weekend, Arsene Wenger’s side need to send out a message to the rest of the league that they can bounce back after a bad result.
